Greetings,

I am known (albeit very limited) within the society as Lord Gabriel de Wenslagh of Kent, within the kingdom of Aethelmearc. My persona is that of a 1350 Englishman but my armour is fashioned more upon Otto von Orlamunde c.1340 who wears more of a German harness. Below is a representation of Orlamunde by Angus McBride.

Otto von Orlamunde

I received the title of lord when I was graciously granted my award of arms for heavy fighting by their majesties at the time, Count Duncan von Halstern and Countess Ilish O'Donovan. During my brief time so far within the society I have come to meet many wonderful people and begin a very good path to travel over the coming years.

Since joining I have managed to work with terrific people. The key people in my training are Viscount Sir Alexander Caithnes of Wyk. He has accomplished more within this society as an individual than I believe most shires have as a collective. He is impressive in his fighting prowess as well as his knowledge of all things historical. He will quite simply give you the world to help you become a better person in whatever aspect you desire. I have been given the privilege of being accepted as his apprentice and he is the only active armouring laurel within in our kingdom according to my knowledge. I truly hope one day I will possess even a limited amount of his ability to move metal and shape it as easily as he does.

Another person that has shown me the proper way to treat people is Baron Vladisla Nikulich. This man is truly what courtesy and chivalry personifies. He is well known within the society as someone that is always willing to give in whatever aspect is called for and always manages to go above and beyond it. His love of this is what has truly inspired me to try and become a better fighter and person within the society. He is the standard to which I hold people for the genuine consideration of others but make no mistake....he will soundly beat you on the field but then gladly spend hours afterwards drinking and talking about it while completely downplaying his abilities. Modest does not begin to describe him.

I feel I have been able to accomplish a lot in my short first two years. Again, being awarded the arms for fighting meant a considerable amount to me. I have been fortunate enough to have been taken under wing in my fighting as well by Sir Alexander, to whom I hope to squire one day after making some acceptable gains as his apprentice first, and while being in his household I get to work alongside his squire, the aforementioned Baron Vladisla. With the training I have received I have been able to become a much more capable fighter. I realize I have many many years of training before me but I did earn a victory in a novice tourney at the end of the 2008 fighting season where I was called into court and wished well in my path by their current majesties, Christopher and Morgen. I also had the privilege of fighting his majesties in a Gold Chain tournament held in 2008. He was the crown prince at the time and I was extremely nervous to face him. He was cordial and welcoming and shook my hand as an equal on the field with no sign of patronizing or such. He impressed me on that day with the ease of his nature and the speed and accuracy of his blows. I will always remember that meeting. To him after this many years and victories I am sure it was just another Saturday but to me it was much more.

This year 2009, I have simple goals. Learn more weapons forms as I am lacking sorely in that department. Create armour pieces of decent quality and deepen my knowledge of armour creation. And never again to finish last within a tournament I enter. I am blessed with the knowledge and practice time of two well known knights within the kingdom as well as Baron Vladisla who himself is on the path. Their combined knowledge has made my fight potential grow by leaps and bounds so I feel confident that I shall at least give a good accounting this year.

Within this site I hope to assemble my thoughts, articles, and anything relating to the historical society. I enjoy sites that have comprehensive listings that I may peruse for hours and hope to create the same here. I will be borrowing images and topics to discuss and review. Mostly for my benefit as this site does not experience high traffic but if you do find something that belongs to you please contact me and I will remove it.
